Mini-Reviews {January 2019}

The last couple of months of the year consisted of me binging on books during my Thanksgiving and Winter vacations. It was absolutely glorious and satisfying to catch up with my Goodreads challenge and read a bunch of books I’d been dying to get my hands on for a long time.

With those huge binging sessions, though, came a giant backlog of reviews that needed to be written.

Instead of trying to remember exactly what I liked and didn’t like in all of the novels I read, I decided to do a series of mini-reviews instead!

These are little bite-sized snippets of my thoughts and feelings about these books, along with a star-rating. Perfect for those who like to skim (like meeeeee!)

I hope you enjoy!

I’ve read a handful of books by Penelope Ward and I’ve come away from most feeling the same thing… they are almost really great, but mostly just ok.

Coming Soon: Mini-Reviews {August 2018}

You guys… I’ve been the WORST blogger this past week. August is an insane month around here. School just started for my girls and literally EVERYONE but me has a birthday in August at my house: my husband and both of my girls have birthdays this month!

Anyway, please accept my apologies for not being very present here or in your comments section. I’m dying at how many great blog posts I’ve likely missed by you!

Anyway…

Here are the reviews that are coming up over the next few weeks + their mini-reviews!

Recently Added to My TBR (July 2018)

I’m just settling in from a Date Day with my youngest daughter, Violet (3yo). Her sister has been at my parents house for a couple days and my husband was gone for the day, so I took advantage of the opportunity to have some fun, just her and I.

We went bowling, played in the arcade, went out to lunch, got some FroYo, went to the library, then came home and promptly took a nap. I actually slept, too! Which is rare. Usually, I can’t turn my brain off and use the opportunity to get some stuff done, but I passed right out.

Anyway, this is a fairly new feature I’ve added to the blog last month where I show you all the books that I’ve added to my TBR! (As if the thing isn’t long enough.

Here are all the books I’ve added to my TBR this month

(In order from date added. Titles link to Goodreads.)

TBH I’m not sure why I added Dr. Strange Beard to my TBR when I haven’t even read the first book, but I’m sure I’ll love the series, so I’m not mad about it. After recently reading my first Tammara Webber and enjoying it, I decided to check out some of her other books and Between the Lines looked really good. I actually only recently realized, after reading Legendary, that the third book in the trilogy had a title! As for Toil and Trouble, I mean, the cover is freaking gorgeous and the topic is exciting!

I read the first part of Jake Undone at the end of Gemini, and it got me hooked enough to add it to my TBR (even though Penelope Ward books have either been complete misses for me or just OK).

Most of these books and some of the ones below were added to my TBR after reading this post by Book Twins Reviews!

I’m actually surprised that To Kill a Kingdom wasn’t already on my TBR!

After finally reading The Kiss Quotient, I added Helen Hoang’s other book! The last three are books that I found at my local library’s little used book store. They’re a Persephone retelling!

Have you read any of these books? What have you added to you TBR this month?

Gentleman Nine by Penelope Ward

3-stars
Overall Rating: 3 Stars
Title: Gentleman Nine
Author: Penelope Ward
Format: Audiobook purchased from Audible

Synopsis:
Growing up, the three of us were friends.
He was the nerd.
I was the playboy.
She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.
Amber never knew how I felt.
They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.
When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.
One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.
Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.
Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.
She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend—me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.
When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she was stunned to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

Review

I loved the premise of this story, it had so much potential, and it started off great… it just didn’t quite live up to what I was hoping it would be. And I’m not entirely sure why.

Books I Didn’t Finish (May 2018)

With so many books in my TBR pile, many of which I already own, I can be pretty picky.

If a novel doesn’t grab my attention by the first 50 or so pages, I set it aside and start a new book.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that at some point I won’t go back to it and try again. Sometimes it’s simply timing and my mood. I’m a total mood reader and since reading is strictly something I do for pleasure, I never force myself to read a book that doesn’t interest me.

This month, in particular, I was pretty moody. I kept starting and stopping books just because I couldn’t get into them. In this post I’ll be listing all the books that I moved to my DNF list.

Reading List: May 2018

Hello, May!

I have a Summer resolution and that is to go to the beach more. I’m literally minutes away from the beach and around only an hour away from one of the best beaches in the US and I’ve gone maybe 3 times last year.

It’s very sad.

This weekend I’ve vowed to take a family trip to the beach.

The beach is a great place to get in some reading! So, I’m going to share with you the books I’m planning to read this month and talk about the books I read last month.

I read a total of 11 books and re-read 3 in April.

Sorry, I know I already used that meme in a previous post, but it’s so good, I can’t help myself.

This month’s haul is not nearly as insane as most of my hauls have been… and, better, I read quite a few of these books already — some even twice!

Here are the books I got in April!

5 Books from my TBR {January 2018}

I figured once a month I would randomly choose books to feature that are on my To Be Read List and see what you all think of them or if they’re on your TBR, too!

Since my TBR list is gigantic, I figured I’d choose one book from 5 different categories:

  • A book I own on Audible
  • A book I own on Kindle
  • A book on my bookshelf at home
  • A book from my TBR ASAP List on Goodreads
  • A book from my general TBR Shelf on Goodreads

Book Haul: Audible’s Win-Win Sale

book-haul

Audible has done it to me again.

They have a sale going on now that I just couldn’t pass up. $4.95 for some fantastic audiobooks that have been waiting for me on my To Be Read list, along with several favorites that I already own. If you’re an Audible member, I highly recommend checking out this sale. Some of these audiobooks retail for $30+ and they are on sale for less than $5 until Sept. 17.

I should mention now that I am in no way affiliated with Audible, I’m just an avid listener and I probably keep them in business with how many audiobooks I purchase. #obsessed

Anyway, onward to the haul and favorites from Audible’s Win-Win sale!
