In this stand-alone companion to the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone series comes the story of Mik and Zuzana’s fantastical first date—as a gorgeously illustrated gift edition with bonus content included.

Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her “rabid fairy,” her “voodoo eyes” are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or “Violin Boy,” her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to make the first move, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It’s a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter’s night before leading him to the treasure: herself! Violin Boy is not going to know what hit him.

New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy—the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Originally published as an ebook, this new print edition will include breathtaking black and white illustrations, plus bonus content in a gorgeous package perfect for new and current fans of the series.

Is it weird that this might be my favorite book in this whole series?

Zuzanna is one of my all-time favorite side characters and I absolutely loved being in her head.

Sometimes when an amazing side character gets their own book (or novella in this case), they lose some of their shine, but not Zuzanna. Her character is absolutely everything in this book. She’s spicy and hilarious and unique.

And, man, does Laini Taylor know how to write a romance. In Daughter of Smoke and Bone, the romance is just as good, but there was so much going on in the story it got buried a little bit.

This story, however, is all about Mik and Zuzanna’s romance story and it left me absolutely breathless.

I knew I was going to enjoy this book if only for Zuzanna or at least Laini Taylor’s writing, what I didn’t expect was to get absolutely swept away in this romance.

I love how unique this first-meeting story was. The lengths Zuzanna took and, in turn, how Mik absolutely deserved it.

And Mik… oh my goodness, I’m so into this kind of hero. I love the sweet, almost innocent male lead. I loved how he was described as being like an alien who is so enthralled with this planet. How he was cool, not in the disinterested way, but in the exact opposite. He loved the everyday magic. Such an attractive quality and absolutely deserving of someone like Zuzanna.

It was so nice getting a peek at how Zuzanna sees Karou as well. I love their friendship so much.

The illustrations in this novel were perfect. They matched the mood of the series and definitely added something extra to the story.
