After (Books 1-4) by Anna Todd + Movie Review

Overall Rating: # Stars
Title: After
Author: Anna Todd
Series: After (Books 1-4)
Format: Audiobooks purchased from Audible

Experience the internet’s most talked-about book, now a major motion picture, from Anna Todd, the writer Cosmopolitan called “the biggest literary phenomenon of her generation.” Now with new exclusive material!

There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything AFTER… Life will never be the same. #Hessa

Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, and tattoos, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless…could this be love?

You guys… this entire series was a hot freaking mess and the movie was awkward and barely followed the same storyline, but goddammit if I didn’t read the entire series in a week and watch the movie several times.

I don’t often call books trash, but I would certainly categorize After as total trash.

If we are being honest, I’m not a big fan of fanfiction to begin with, but I don’t even understand how this was Harry Styles fanfiction? I guess Harden kind of was described as Harry Styles looks, but his personality doesn’t seem at all like Harry’s? And he’s not even a musician?

Of course, who am I to judge, because I don’t really know much about Harry Styles or how fanfiction works, anyway.

In any case, all the fanfiction business aside, Harden and Tessa are an awful couple. There is so much wrong with their toxic relationship, I don’t even know where to begin. Tessa is incredibly annoying and judgey and it probably doesn’t help that I’m not the biggest fan of the virginal heroine thing to begin with, but she just takes it to far. She slut shames her “friends” and she seems so incredibly immature.

This probably has to do with her horrible mother who was just completely over-the-top awful.

Speaking of over-the-top awful, Harden is probably the biggest hot mess of them all. He’s just plain mean, a bully, verbally and mentally abusive, and has very few, if any, redeeming qualities.

And, oh my goodness, the storyline.

You guys… it was so obvious to me that this story was dragged on waaaay too long. It was riddled with plotholes and BS plot devices that drove me insane.

Now, you may think this is a rant review, and I guess it kind of is… but let me reiterate… I read the entire series. These are not short books. They are bible-long, people. I. Read. Every. Page. In succession. Nonstop.

I’m not one to hate-read, I think it’s pointless and there are way too many amazing books out there that I want to read, I don’t like wasting my time being angry the entire time I’m reading.

But I couldn’t freaking stop. I needed to know what was going to happen to this couple and what kind of hot mess awaited me in each book.

I couldn’t tell you what happened in which book because it all blended together, but pretty much every cliche thing that could happen, did happen.

As for the movie? They changed so much, it shouldn’t have even been associated with the book. I will say, though, Tessa and her mother were far less annoying in the movie than the book and Harden was 100% Annikan Skywalker in the movie, but whatever. I still loved it and watched it in the theatre twice, shamelessly.

So, I guess, all this to say, that this series is trash, the book is trash, and so am I.

  1. These books are the equivalent of drugs – you know it’s bad but you can’t stop once you start.
I totally agree with every single thing you said – and I did the exact same thing, read all books back to back in a week…
I didn’t watch the hole movie… it was too much for me!

    1. Hahaha! I’m glad I’m not alone in this! My coworker and I both read it around the same time and we thought the same thing. I’ll tell her about the drug analogy LMAO!

Have you read Paper Princess? I have similar feelings about that series.

      1. You’re definitely not alone in this ❤️
OMG, I couldn’t finish that book! It was so bad, I just didn’t finish it at all! My friend read all of them in a row (much like After) but I just couldn’t!
