Hooking Up (Shaking Up #2) by Helena Hunting
[Audiobook Purchased from Audible]
Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw.
Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him. They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical.
Filled with hilariously scandalous situations and enough sexual chemistry to power an airplane from New York City to the South Pacific, Hooking Up is the next standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Helena Hunting, the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series and Shacking Up.
I didn’t freaking know this was part of a series, and worse, the second book in a series! That’s what I get for seeing Helena Hunting’s name and immediately grabbing it from The Romance Package without even reading the synopsis or anything.
Those who know me know I’m kind of a stickler about reading books in order, even if they are “standalone” novels. It’s a weird pet peeve of mine.
With that being said, I didn’t feel “left in the dark” at all with this novel. I didn’t feel like I should’ve known other characters better, in fact, I don’t even know who the first book would’ve been about. There weren’t really any super obvious hints. Of course, I wasn’t looking for any because I had no idea until after I finished the freaking book that It was part of a series.
Anyway, as far as the story goes, I mean, it’s Helena Hunting. My girl did a fantastic job opening the book with the perfect meetcute right away. I’ve noticed that in all of the books I’ve read by her so far, she gets right into the good stuff, hooks you from the beginning, and never lets you go until the very end.
I adored Lex and Amalie right from the beginning. And that wedding? The entire thing was absolute perfection, despite it being torturous for our characters. But don’t we all love seeing our main characters miserable? It just makes the happily ever that much sweeter. 🙂
Audiobook Performance: 5 Stars
Muffy Newton and Jacob Morgan. Need I say more? Two of my favorite readers teamed up for this one and I couldn’t be happier.
Butterfly Rating: 5 Stars
Most of the butterflies were in the beginning, but there was a fairly steady mini-swarm throughout.
Re-read Worthiness: Maybe
I’ll see how the rest of the series is. I might reread the first part at least 🙂 It’s that good.
Bookshelf Placement: Yes
Much like Lauren Rowe, I may need all of HH’s books on my shelf.
Book Boyfriend Rating: 5 stars
Lex is legit one of my favorites. HH dreams up some of the contemporary best book boyfriends! (I say contemporary because no one can dream up a better book boyfriend than Sarah J. Maas. Rhys and Rowan? Come on now.)
