Under Locke by Mariana Zapata
[Audiobook purchased from Audible]
He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.
After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly… even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.
And the last thing they ever expected was each other.
But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.
… she should have chosen the strip club.
Somehow Mariana Zapata managed to make me fall in love with two things I previously thought I disliked: pet names (babe/baby/honey in particular) and motorcycle gangs. This novel was one of my favorites that I’ve read by her, and I was definitely not expecting to like it as much as I did!
After taking a two-book break from reading all the MZ books I could get my hands on (I only have two more to go!), it was so nice coming back to her funny, sweet, interesting characters. In every MZ book I’ve read so far, the relationships between friends and lovers, are always so realistic and heartwarming. This book was no different.
I loved Dex from the beginning, which I thought was going to be pure torture given that MZ has a knack for slow burns, but I found the pacing in this book to be absolutely perfect. Dex was the perfect misunderstood, hot-headed, alpha with a hidden soft side. The tattoos and piercings were a definite bonus.
I also really adored the MC, Iris. She was sweet, without being sickeningly so, and virginal without being clueless. Like all of MZ’s characters, Iris was multidimensional and believable.
As for the story, like I mentioned before, the pacing was perfect and I was completely “in” the story the entire time I was reading. I was so freaking happy that MZ’s books are usually pretty long because I don’t have to worry about the book ending too soon!
Audiobook Performance: 5 Stars
I’ve said it before: Callie Dalton is one of my favorite audiobook readers and she certainly didn’t disappoint in Under Locke.
Butterfly Rating: 4 Stars
My butterfly rating scale makes it really difficult for books to reach 4 and 5 stars and that is 100% because of A Court of Mist and Fury. This is the first book in awhile that was able to reach 4 stars and for good reason. There were so many sweet moments in this book that had me blissfully grinning from ear-to-ear.
Re-read Worthiness: 4 Stars
I totally want to relive many of the moments in this book. There are too many great ones to count!
Bookshelf Placement: Yes!
I think I just need special a MZ shelf.
New Book Boyfriend: Yes
Fine, Dex, you can be my newest book boyfriend. You can call me all the lame pet names you want. ❤
